What does a person's taste in music say about them?

You've met someone and are talking about the type of music they like. Does their taste in music tell you something about their character?

Research from psychologists suggests it does.

Pop

People who love top 40 hits tend to have more of an extraverted personality and get along great with people in social situations.

Rap and Hip Hop

Similarly to those who love pop, rap and hip hop fans are also more out-there when it comes to socialising with other people and have high self-esteem.

Dance

Outgoingness and assertiveness are common traits amongst people who love dance tunes.

Rock / Heavy Metal

Contrary to popular belief, lovers of rock and heavy metal tend to be more gentle. They usually have a creative personality but are more introverted.

Indie

Typically fans of indie music tend to also be more introverted, have good creativity and are intellectual. They also tend to have lower self-esteem, may be passive and have higher anxiety.

Country

Often a sign of emotional stability - people who love country music tend to be conventional, hard-working and outgoing.

Classical

Good self-esteem and creativity are common characteristics of lovers of classical music. They also tend to be slightly more introverted, but there are always exceptions to the rule.

Jazz, Blues and Soul

Lovers of jazz, blues and soul music are often more extraverted and possess high self-esteem.

These aren't of course hard and fast rules, and there will always be exceptions, but at least it's a guide to go from.
