How to get into the music industry
The music industry is exciting to get into. It's full of amazing opportunities and great people to meet. Whether you're interested in working in Australia, the US, UK or anywhere else in the world, if you plan to enter the industry, there are a couple of things you can do to help get your foot in the door.
Volunteer or work at music festivals
Music festivals are a great place to get started in the industry. You'll see the goings-on behind the scenes, learn how things work and if you're lucky, even get to meet some prominent names in the industry. Consider doing an internship at a music festival office. Anything you can get your hands on - do it. Keep a lookout on Facebook and industry websites for when festivals are looking for volunteers.
Study sound production and music
Academic qualifications will definitely help you in industry - you'll gain experience, learn new perspectives about how things are done, start building a portfolio, plus if you play your cards right, you'll get industry networking experience as you go. There are lots of private, university and TAFE providers around Australia offering suitable courses.
Network, network, network
As is the case with most industries, networking is crucial for success, and even more so in music. It's a tight-knit industry where who you know gets you places. Go to industry functions, show people your skills, try to get the word out in the work you're interested in doing to see if there are any jobs going. Ask and ask again. Keep asking around and work towards your goals until you land the dream job in the music industry you're looking for. The sky really is the limit.
