What DJs do to bring the house down
We've all experienced it - a DJ who really knows how to create a great atmosphere. When it's done right, everyone wants to stay on the dancefloor the whole night. So what are some of the things that makes a great DJ?
Great DJs always watch the crowd and make adjustments so that everyone's feeling the right vibes. They use hand gestures to lead the crowd and know how to MC on stage. Instead of just playing the latest singles like everyone else, they might drop a remixed version, a mash up, or do a live remix.
Crowds like to be surprised and entertained. It's not about doing obvious mixing between tracks. It's about taking advantages of changes in tracks and adding other tracks to maintain the same pace if there's a change. Instead of just cutting between tracks, DJs should use effects like echoes, loops and sample records. Equalizer knobs can be used for cutting off the bass or leaving only the lyrics.
Maintaining the right pace is vital. If a DJs set is going fast, they'll keep it that way and only slow down momentarily to let people chill. The speed will usually increase, not decrease.
It will always be the crowd that then ultimately determines the atmosphere in a club. When the music's right and there's a connection between the music and the people on the dance floor, the rest falls into place.
